And the anger is palpable towards the government, who they say is responsible for the tragedy. These people did not die by accident. It is the consequence of a failing system. A year has already passed, but no one has been held accountable. It's sad. The collapse of the train station's concrete canopy triggered one of the largest protest movements Serbia has ever seen. At the forefront were university students and professors, who for months have rallied the population to their cause. They accused President Aleksandar Vucic and his party of corruption, crippling the massive public works projects across the country. After a year of long demonstrations, one might have thought that this movement would eventually fizzle out, which is precisely what the Vucic regime was counting on. However, it has endured because ultimately it's not just the tragedy of Novi Sad that explains this movement, it's much deeper. The fact that it's spreading throughout the country tells us that the Vucic regime has a loss of control over the population. The Serbian government initially responded by repressing the demonstrators before calling for dialogue, but the movement continues to demand early elections.
