A horse farm in Kentucky has introduced an innovative approach to addiction recovery by incorporating thoroughbred horses into its rehabilitation program. Known as Stable Recovery, the initiative is a year-long, 12-step program that is free for participants and funded by private donors. The program hosts around 50 men recovering from addiction, who live and work on the farm while caring for approximately 750 thoroughbred horses.

Participants and counselors, many of whom are in recovery themselves, report that working with the horses provides a non-judgmental environment that aids in healing and personal growth. Of the 25 people who have completed the program, 22 remain sober and are now employed on horse farms. The program highlights the therapeutic impact of animal care in supporting long-term sobriety.

That's the hit right there. They don't ask. They don't ask where you come from, how'd you get here, what'd you do. They don't judge me. Franks started here clearing out the stalls. Two and a half years later, he supervises the care of 178 horses, and the meth life is behind him. So I literally was on the street crying my eyes out every single day, begging God to take me off of this earth. Four hours into this farm, I'm smiling again. I got a horse in my hand. I just, I feel like I have a purpose, and that was here to take care of these animals. As you're taking care of the horse, you're taking care of you. Yes, absolutely. These horses love me back to life. Twenty-five people have completed the one-year program. Twenty-two are still sober, and they're all working on horse farms. There's something about a horse. Yeah.
