This figure surpasses the $107 billion achieved during the PS4 generation and marks a consistent increase in revenue across each PlayStation generation since the original PS1. The reported sales include ongoing revenue from PS4 hardware and software, with over 80.3 million PS5 units sold worldwide as of the end of June 2025, though PS4 total sales remain higher at 117 million units.

In related gaming news, Microsoft announced pricing for its ROG Xbox Ally handhelds, and Square Enix provided reassurance about the development of Final Fantasy VII Remake Part III, following strong performance of the second installment on PC and PS5. The director of the remake trilogy affirmed that the final part is progressing well and aims to deliver a satisfying conclusion for fans.

Sony has called the PS5 its most financially successful console generation to date. This was revealed by Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino during his recent keynote speech delivered at Tokyo Game Show. According to Nishino's presentation, Sony's Game and Network Services division, which includes Sony Interactive Entertainment, has generated $136 billion in sales during the PS5 generation so far. This surpasses sales made during the reign of all previous Sony consoles, making the PS5 the most successful generation to date. In comparison, the division made $107 billion from 2013 to 2019, aka the PS4 generation. A graph revealed that over the past 31 years since the original PS1's launch, each subsequent console generation has brought in more money than the last. For reference, sales during the PS3 lifecycle were $71 billion, the PS2 $44 billion, and the PS1 $24 billion. It should be emphasized that these revenue figures encompass sales across the entire game and network business during the time periods in question, so that huge $136 billion in sales during the PS5 generation will include money Sony continues to make from PS4 hardware and software. According to Sony's most recent sales data, PS5 consoles have sold an estimated combined total of over 80.3 million units worldwide as of June 30th, 2025. Total PS4 console sales still outnumber this $117 million. Nishino also specifically addressed the Japanese publishers in attendance at TGS, saying, I believe that the demand for Japanese games is on the rise worldwide. Japanese publishers have been essential to the PlayStation's success since the very beginning, and we strongly believe that they will continue to be so. Going forward, we would like to continue to be a hub for disseminating excellent Japanese content to the world. Moving on, Microsoft has confirmed the price of the ROG Xbox Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally ahead of the release of both handheld gaming PCs on October 16th. The company has gone for $1,000 for the more powerful ROG Xbox Ally X and $600 for the ROG Xbox Ally. The pricing announcement comes in hot from Microsoft with just a few weeks to go until the handheld's launch. At Gamescom in August, Microsoft and Asus told IGN the company still needed, quote, more time to figure out the macroeconomic impact of pricing, a statement issued amid frequently shifting market conditions fueled by ever-changing U.S. tariffs. The ROG Xbox Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally launched into an increasingly competitive market for handheld gaming hardware, with the cheaper Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch 2 now firmly entrenched. Meanwhile, Microsoft has come under fire for repeatedly hiking the price of its Xbox hardware. Just last week, Microsoft announced that Xbox console prices would go up once again in the U.S. after already rising them back in May. And finally today, Final Fantasy VII Remake Part III director Naoki Hamaguchi has assured fans that despite Square Enix admitting last year that Rebirth did not meet expectations, the second part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy has been doing very well on both PC and PS5. The team has apparently been able to channel that success into a high-quality third installment. The concern revolved around the suggestion that the scope of Part III might have been scaled back as a result of Rebirth's disappointing profits, but Rebirth has been enjoying a comeback of sorts after debuting strongly on PC. Hamaguchi also took the opportunity to assure the community that development on Final Fantasy VII Part III is going extremely well, adding, This is going to be the climax, the finale of the series, and we're going to make it a suitable finale, a really great send-off for the game. It will be something ideally we hope will please fans, will delight the fans of this much-loved series, and really reward everyone for sticking with us to the end. So look forward to that.
