The Gambia has taken steps towards lifting a ban on female genital mutilation (FGM), a move that could make it the first country in the world to reverse legal protections against the practice for millions of women and girls. Politicians in the West African nation’s parliament voted 42 to four to advance the controversial bill.

This decision comes after the country had previously established legal protections against this practice, protecting millions of women and girls. With the vote standing at 42 in favor and four against, The Gambia could become the first nation globally to retract such legal protections against FGM.

Those in favor, 4-2, 42. Those not in favor, 4. An overwhelming majority in the Gambia's National Assembly for female genital mutilation to be brought back. The bill still needs more discussion to pass, but the sentiment, at least in here, is clear. And the law is inconsistent with the aspiration of the majority of the people. Should be reconsidered. Outside, a show of support for both sides. These women are for the cutting and removal of all or parts of the external female genitalia, often done as girls are still very young. But many protested against the repealing of the law. Activists say it reverses years of progress for women's rights. Most prominent voices that we hear are men, and we need to listen to women and young girls who've been through female genital mutilation and have the scars to show for it. And I don't mean just physical scars, I mean mental scars. We need to listen to activists that have been through FGM and that are now advocating against FGM. I think if this bill is passed, it gives them a chance to go after the child marriage law. It gives them a chance to go after the domestic violence law. This is not only about female genital mutilation, but this is about women and the control of women's body. According to the UN, around 230 million girls worldwide have been cut. Countries with the highest rates include Egypt, Sudan, Somalia, Mali, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Eritrea. Babies are cut, as also older adolescent girls. FGM consists of removing a part of the female genitalia that provides sexual pleasure for women and can also include the stitching of the body part to practically close it. The UN says the general practice has seen a downward trend, but it is slow-paced. In 2015, world leaders voted to ban FGM by 2030, saying it was rooted in gender inequality and power imbalances. But activists admit there is no way the practice shows any signs of being eradicated and now the Gambia is on the verge of bringing it back. Stephanie Decker, Al Jazeera.
