The Taliban government has once again rejected a possible return of U.S. troops to Afghanistan. The somewhat surprising proposal has come from President Donald Trump, who has been saying recently U.S. forces should take over the Bagram base.

The Taliban has rejected a proposal by former US President Donald Trump for American troops to return to Afghanistan, particularly to the Bagram airbase. Trump, who has been critical of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, suggested that regaining Bagram would be strategically important and hinted at possible incentives for the Taliban if they agreed to a new deal.

The Taliban responded by emphasizing the US commitment not to threaten Afghanistan's territorial integrity, referencing the original Doha agreement. Despite Trump's criticism of the withdrawal process, which was initiated under his administration, the Taliban has maintained a diplomatic stance while firmly opposing any return of foreign troops.

Four years after the chaotic withdrawal of the last US troops from Afghanistan, President Donald Trump has put the prospect of a return of American soldiers firmly back on the agenda. He seems fixated on this place, Bagram, just outside Kabul. It was, for 20 years, the main staging base for US forces during their 20-year war. Now, he says, he wants it back or bad things might happen. Bagram was given up as part of the US withdrawal deal agreed in Doha, and not surprisingly, the Taliban government in Kabul isn't keen on the idea. It should be recalled that the United States pledged that it will not use or threaten force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Afghanistan. Therefore, it is necessary that they remain faithful to their commitments. Trump has always been highly critical of the way the US pulled out of Afghanistan, leaving behind vast quantities of military equipment, which was on full display at Bagram on the third anniversary of the US withdrawal. Blaming former President Joe Biden for the chaos, Trump seemed to forget the agreement was signed under his administration. What Trump is trying, it is pushing Taliban to a corner to have a new deal. So he is trying to get out of the Doha agreement, pushing Taliban to make a new deal where they can accept a part of his force back on the ground. It's thought a return to Bagram would be strategically important, encountering the growing influence of China since the US departure. And Trump has hinted there could be rewards for the Taliban if they did a deal. In rejecting the idea, the Taliban has been firm but diplomatic with the US, mindful of maintaining cordial relations with such an economic power and also knowing its own precarious position. But with a history of invasions going back hundreds of years, talk of foreign boots on Afghan soil is highly emotive here. And an American boot especially, given recent history, a step too far.
