We have come together to thank God for the life of John Laws, to mourn and honour him. And come together they did. From homeless men. He was a person who stood up for the battlers. To billionaires. What he said was genuine. That's all you need. Nothing else. And to some of the dozens of political leaders who squared up against him. He was really in many ways, I guess, the broadcaster that walked Sydney in particular through the 70s, the 80s and the 90s. He'll be sorely missed. Australia has produced some great talkback broadcasters. And he was top of the pops. He was part of your life, whether you agreed with him or not. He was part of the staple diet that came on after Wheat Bix. Old neighbours were there. He used to live down the street from where I live in Mossman. I miss him so much. And most importantly, there were his listeners. I've been following him all my life. And there was a certain charm about him. Time has meant even John Laws' greatest scandal is now just the fodder for laughs. It's kind of like cash for comments, but less obvious. All sins forgiven. The goodness in Jesus was not unlike the goodness in John. Kindness is wisdom. Kindness is strength. Acts of kindness are proof of intelligence. John Laws, my neighbour, my mischievous mate, my good friend, was a very kind man. Say true blue, don't say you're gone. And so the final journey for the man who found fortune and fame and for all the flaws that were acknowledged here today, who kept the common touch to the end of a long and quintessentially Australian life.
