This phenomenon has been attributed to the genre of "Slow TV," which provides a meditative escape from the fast-paced social media world. With no soundtrack or narrative, and minimal action, viewers still find the slow depiction of nature captivating and authentic.

Supporters of the show often watch during periods of heightened activity such as sunrise and sunset, enjoying the serene presence of not only elk but a variety of wildlife including birds and swans. From northern Sweden's coastal forests through the Angerman River to warmer inland pastures, this 20-day annual spring event is captivating global audiences. That's after the Swedish broadcaster positioned 26 remote cameras, seven night cameras, 20 kilometers of cable and deployed a drone. The slow TV concept and the meditative feeling of the program is actually what people like because everyone is so stressed today with the social media and the way we produce everything we do in our life and this is the total opposite of that. The show, called Den stora Alvandringen or The Great Elk Migration, was established the same year as the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Its audiences have grown to 9 million today. Many fans are enjoying an escape from the frenetic world of social media. And they're hooked. We put up Den stora Alvandringen, The Great Moose Migration, on the big screen in my classroom and started watching it every day. I make sure I have coffee, I have snacks, I have prepared food so I don't have to be in the kitchen too long, sleep, forget it, I don't sleep. The elk are the stars of the show. But the broadcaster says most viewers will tune in around sunrise or sunset to view nature when it's most active, capturing everything from birds of prey to swans and wildcats. Unlike reality television, it's less staged so it feels a lot more authentic and I think that it's appealed to something natural and authentic taking place which we can witness in minute by minute in real time is very powerful.
