Drone footage captured the shark's escape, and a five-metre white shark was caught and then broke free from a nearby drumline shortly after the incident. This is the second shark attack at the beach in recent weeks, prompting calls from local authorities for increased funding to monitor shark activity. Despite the beach closure, some surfers have returned to the water, raising concerns about public safety.

On a picture-perfect day, crystal-clear waters distracted from the danger below. Brad Ross was surfing at Cabaretta Beach around 7.30 this morning when an apex predator attacked. I looked at him, we both looked at his wave and I got the wave. Amazing. Looked back and his board was just blown into pieces. It was just an explosion. The board went exploding. One half went that way, one half went that way. He swam back to shore before his board washed up in two, with a giant, bite-sized chunk missing from the middle. I've turned on a five record! Yeah, happy that he's not, you know, hurt. There's like not a scratch on him. His board was snapped and a big bite out of it. Yeah, very lucky guy. Drone footage captured its escape. Around two hours later, a five-metre white shark was caught in a drumline nearby, but broke free before it could be inspected. Yeah, pretty scary, eh? This is the second attack at Cabaretta Beach in less than two months. A 16-year-old boy was seriously injured when he was bitten on the arm and leg at the same cove at the end of June. The shark was caught on camera stalking him back to shore. Because they're setting all the drumlines out here, that's probably one of the reasons we're getting so many shark attacks. Residents say shark sightings have been ramping up, and the Tweed Mayor wants to see more funding to monitor their activity along the coast. The drones are only as good as the time that they're up there, and at the moment, the Surf Life Setting Clubs are only funded for the school holiday periods. Two additional drumlines have now been set at the site, and Cabaretta Beach remains closed. I'm seeing people are back out there surfing, even though the beach is closed. So, you know, I think that is taking an unnecessary risk. Tiani Reid, 10 News.
