Civilians who've fled Sudan’s Kordofan region are seeking refuge in the capital Khartoum, after a journey that often takes days.

Hundreds of families from Sudan's Kordofan region have fled to Khartoum and its surrounding areas as violence between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) intensifies. Many of those displaced are women and children, with reports of men being detained or killed during attempts to escape. 

The RSF has laid siege to several towns, leading to severe shortages and famine-like conditions. Humanitarian aid is being distributed at a school in Omdurman, but the displaced continue to face urgent needs for food, shelter, and medical care, with more families expected to arrive as the conflict persists.

This school in Omdurman has turned into an aid distribution center for those fleeing Sudan's southern Kurdufan region. The area has seen an increase in fighting between the army and paramilitary rapid support forces or RSF. It took Awatif Osman and her sister more than two months to get to hear from Kadugli, the capital of south Kurdufan state. The city, controlled by the Sudanese army, has been under siege by the RSF for more than a year. She says the siege has created severe shortages. She now lives with relatives, but has little to provide for her children. It took me two months and ten days to get to Khartoum because of the difficulties on the journey. My children suffered from malnutrition. I have a daughter who was in hospital for ten days because of anemia. She was discharged this morning. Kadugli is not the only place in Kurdufan where people are being forced to leave their home. Ibtihal Ahmed, her mother and two daughters, fled from Bara in north Kurdufan after the RSF gained control of the city in October. She says it took them 15 days to get to Khartoum. We left because of the RSF. They came into our homes. They forced you from your house and beat you and leave you with nothing. They didn't spare a single home. They killed people. People were injured. Children died. The elderly died. We lost a lot of people. More than 500 families have arrived in the capital and its surrounding areas in the past month according to authorities here. Most of those who've made it to Khartoum are women and children. Some say the RSF detained or killed men who tried to make the journey to safety. The paramilitary group has laid siege to several towns and cities in Kurdufan, trapping civilians. Information has been confirmed in some of them with warnings that famine-like conditions are spreading through the region. Most of the displaced have settled with relatives but come to the school for humanitarian assistance coordinated by the district's youth union. These people need to eat. All these people are going through tough circumstances. They've left their homes with only the clothes on their back. They need food. They need beds. They need medical assistance. Despite the long trek to get to Khartoum, many more are expected to take the journey in the coming days. If the bill passes, the US Justice Department would be required to release all files and communications related to Epstein, as well as details about the investigation into his death in federal prison.
