Protesters marched in the center of the capital, Lima, escorted by riot police after the president of Congress threatened demonstrators saying that, quote, there will be repression if protests turn violent. Many demonstrators here remembered two youngsters killed five years ago marching against the government. Police have been indicted in that case, but people here said there is still no justice. This is a tribute to them, but also to the 50 people who died in the South and to our comrade Truco, killed by the police. We're here against state-sponsored violence. And many Peruvians are demanding the closure of Congress. They say it's corrupt. More than 100 legislators are under criminal investigations. As citizens, we're afraid to live in this country. Many of our friends have gone abroad. If I had the opportunity, I would leave. But I don't. I have to stay and live here. I have to survive. People here are demanding also the resignation of President Jose Geri, who's been touring around the country sending the message that his government is fighting crime. The perception of most Peruvians here is that they see more homicides every day, they see a growing number of extortions and violent attacks, and they say that the state of emergency that was declared three weeks ago hasn't changed too much because people say they still feel they live in fear.
