After losing their home and cherished art collection in the Palisades wildfires, the Adams family received a unique gesture from Los Angeles street artist Retna. Retna, whose real name is Marquis Lewis, collected ashes from the remains of the family's property and used them as a medium to create new artwork for them.

The resulting pieces, titled 'Script of the Flame,' incorporate the physical remnants of the family's loss, transforming them into meaningful art. The process and the emotional impact of the gesture were documented by the Core Art Gallery, highlighting both the resilience of the family and the artist's innovative approach to helping those affected by disaster.

I don't even know where the house was now. An eerie feeling for this family returning to their Palisade Street to find ashes where memories once stood. By no means whatsoever did we think that the fire was going to explode as big as it did and take all of our homes and my own with it. Months later, Jill and Greg Adams still struggle to make sense of it. I think every day I remember something else, you know, that I lost that is, you know, not replaceable. For her, one of those things was her small but growing art collection, three pieces by contemporary street artist, Retna. And the bigger pieces that he couldn't leave with. Who then offered to paint them something new. This one says Santa Monica Mountains. But the medium on this canvas is the ashes from the Adams' home. Something that we had never really tried before was to use like, you know, the earth and mother nature, you know, the elements. I'm trying to see what I can find, even a piece of something. A few weeks after the fire, Retna went with the Adams' to their property and collected what was left behind, turning it into paint. Just seeing everything in rubble and looked like a bomb went off. Go through their house and pick up a couple of pieces. It was a pretty, pretty surreal experience. We only had six pieces of artwork on the wall. A moment captured by the Core Art Gallery as part of a new documentary. I feel so special to be able to have something so unique by someone who I think is just such an amazing artist. Retna, born Marquise Lewis, grew up in Los Angeles as a young graffiti artist. Now trained in hieroglyphics and calligraphy. His art is meant to provoke thought. Do you have hidden messages in all your paintings? Sometimes, sometimes. But the texture of these pieces, titled Script of the Flame, is very clear. Ashes and all the remnants that are still in there. Ashes to art. Remnants of loss repurposed and resurrected. As this artist knows the city he loves will do the same. To have a piece of artwork like this in my home that's made from my home is just something that's going to always be special to our family.
