The famine has caused me to lose weight. I dropped from 78 kilograms to just 42. There's no food and we have no money to buy any. Prices are extremely high. Look at what has become of me. My hands used to be full and strong, now they're just skin and bone. There's no muscle left, no flesh. Look at my legs, my feet. All I eat is half a loaf of bread, because that's all we have. Sometimes I eat only salt, because there is nothing else. Riyad al-Ghazali is just one of many elderly Palestinians who endure this daily battle. His wife Nidaa Abu Shaaban says sometimes they go to sleep without dinner. The soup kitchen doesn't help much. We haven't had meat or cheese in three months. We try to silence our hunger with tiny amounts of food. In Gaza's nursing homes, caregivers have little to offer their elderly patients. Some are so weak. They can no longer move. In recent months, we lost five elders to hunger and starvation. We have no basic supplies. Nothing is available in markets or even charity kitchens. We lost 20 elderly patients during the war out of a total of around 40 residents at the center. We're going through an extremely difficult time. The elderly are physically frail and their mental health is deteriorating day by day. They can't walk away until they become nothing but skin and bone. It's not only the physical deterioration. Doctors warn a lack of food takes its toll on mental health too. Gaza's elderly are facing a silent battle against starvation.
