Some 17,000 people are expected to attend this year as the festival marks 10 years of pushing for gender parity. Organisers are hoping it will be a chance to highlight women’s voices in a field where they’re still underrepresented.

While women make up a significant portion of the animation workforce in France, they remain underrepresented in leadership positions, with only 27% serving as directors. The festival, now in its 49th edition, is marking ten years of initiatives aimed at promoting gender parity and amplifying women's voices in animation.

Industry figures point to persistent stereotypes and structural challenges, such as career progression coinciding with family planning, as barriers to women's advancement. Despite these obstacles, organisers and associations remain optimistic, aiming to achieve equality in the sector within the next 15 years.

It's an industry built on imagination, yet the sector still struggles to imagine women behind the screen. It's a big problem. We can't even name one. A rare exception in animation, Joanna Quinn has been directing free-spirited heroines for over 40 years. She says she wants to give women a voice. Seeing women talk about their experiences is new, really, in film. And to be able to talk about the mundane, not big things, and for it to be listened to is so special. Women may dominate animation schools, but few make it to the top jobs. Some say that's down to deep-rooted stereotypes. People essentially think women don't have enough to say, women are not as strong as men. Half of our battle is to get the heads of studios to understand how important this is and the value that it brings to their productions, to have diversity, you know, and to have different stories and different perspectives and how it actually is, you know, will make them more money. Women in the industry are often paid less, and their films get less funding. In France, women make up 44% of the animation workforce, but only 27% of directors. Progression gets complicated in a woman's life between the ages of 30 and 40 when you become a leader in your field, where you may have opportunities to take on responsibilities or even become a director. But at the same time, you also have the opportunity, if you wish, to become a mother. So it's a question of comfort, help and confidence. Confidence will be key for the next generation too. Breaking the mould won't be easy without strong female role models. We do think about stereotypes. When we set up a project, we ask ourselves, are we going to be accepted? Are we going to be boxed in? Are there things we shouldn't say as women? But I don't want to limit myself. This is about creativity. Associations in the industry say they hope to achieve equality within the next 15 years.
