The European Union's regionalization approach has been adopted, allowing pork exports from unaffected areas to continue. Canine teams from Andorra and Madrid have joined containment efforts in the affected region.

Spain has stepped up its fight against an outbreak of African swine fever. On Thursday, an agriculture official said about 1,000 Spanish law enforcement agents and specialists had been mobilized to control the spread of the disease and cut the number of wild boars. This is Spain's first outbreak of African swine fever since 1994. The virus was found in two wild boars in the Toyserola mountain range, outside Barcelona. Since then, seven more in the same area have died from the disease. This is threatening pork exports from Spain, the European Union's biggest pork producer. Britain said on Wednesday it would allow pork imports from parts of Spain unaffected by African swine fever. That reversed the blanket ban imposed the previous week, after Spain reported its first cases of the disease. The move aligns Britain with the European Union's regionalization approach, which restricts trade only from outbreak zones. Meanwhile, Spain resumed shipments to China from unaffected regions earlier this week, after Beijing narrowed its restrictions to Catalonia. Here is Catalonia's agriculture chief, Oscar O'Diig. The great news is that the European Commission has established this criteria of continue allowing pork exports from unaffected regions, which is the one other countries like United Kingdom have also followed. Regarding China, I think it's a different issue, as there have been negotiations of this protocol since months and years ago of precisely doing a regional banning and not to ban the entire country. O'Diig told reporters that canine teams from Andorra and Madrid had joined the operation working around the closed-off region in Cerdañola del Valles.
