Clashes here in the lower Shabal region have become more frequent in recent months. This town is very strategic as it's a bridge into Mogadishu and serves as a buffer zone protecting Mogadishu and its resources. If Somalia national army forces were not present in these areas, Mogadishu would not be experiencing peace. Somalia has been without a functioning central government since the overthrow of the dictator Siad Barre by warlords in 1991. Now in the capital Mogadishu, things are gradually improving, thanks in part to a heavy security presence and changing tactics by national forces. What we have clearly understood is that the al-Shabaab militants are always evolving. The strategy is always evolving in terms of attack mechanisms and the complexity they're using. As the army continues to fight the militants on the front lines, authorities are also working to target their finances and standing among ordinary Somalis, putting intelligence gathering at the centre of their efforts.
