Somali security officials announced that troops from the elite Danab unit carried out raids on al-Shabaab hideouts in the Lower Shabelle region. Despite these efforts, al-Shabaab continues to launch attacks, including in urban areas such as Mogadishu. The withdrawal of some African Union peacekeeping forces has left gaps in Somali troop deployments, allowing al-Shabaab to reclaim several bases. The group has waged an insurgency against the Somali government for over 16 years, frequently targeting security forces, officials, and civilians.

Al-Shabaab has taken a string of bases vacated by Burundian and Ugandan forces. The group, which has waged an insurgency against the Somali government for over 16 years, regularly targets security forces, government officials and civilians.
