Yemen’s first large-scale solar plant is helping to alleviate electricity shortages in the southern port city of Aden, bringing some relief to residents and businesses which suffer losses particularly when the intense summer heat hits.

Local businesses, previously affected by frequent power outages, are now able to keep goods refrigerated and reduce losses. Solar energy made up just over 10% of Yemen’s electricity generation in 2023, but this share is expected to grow as a second phase of the Aden solar plant is planned to double its capacity by 2026.

What Aden is currently experiencing is an extraordinary expansion in construction and development. This must be accompanied by an expansion of the infrastructure, with electricity being the main pillar and the key factor for any promising economic breakthrough in the country. Thankfully, there is now very positive and tangible progress, especially in daytime generation capacity. This is very noticeable and, God willing, the situation will be better in the coming days. The city's businesses have previously suffered losses, particularly when the intense summer heat hits. Market owner Mubarak Qaid said power outages would damage goods like meat and ice cream, leaving him and other traders out of pocket. Now, he said, having both generators and solar energy keeps products permanently refrigerated. The International Energy Agency said solar power represented only 10.4 per cent of Yemen's total electricity generation in 2023. But this is expected to rise, with a second phase of the Aden solar power plant planned for 2026 to double its capacity.
