Idaho officials say at least two people have been killed after a sniper ambushed firefighters responding to a brush fire in Coeur d’Alene. Investigators say a deceased man was located on Canfield Mountain and that a firearm was found nearby.

Authorities in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, say at least two firefighters were killed after being ambushed by a sniper while responding to a brush fire on Canfield Mountain. A man believed to be the gunman was later found dead with a firearm nearby, and police have lifted the shelter in place order for the area.

The incident began when firefighters responded to a reported brush fire and came under sniper fire. Sheriff's deputies who arrived at the scene also faced gunfire. In addition to the fatalities, a third firefighter was taken to hospital, and an unknown number of civilians were present in the area. The brush fire continues to burn as authorities focus on the aftermath of the attack.

And another story breaking tonight this one out of Idaho. Authorities say at least two firefighters are dead after a sniper ambushed them. The firefighters were responding to a call in a mountain area when the shooting began. However this evening another major development the body of a man with a firearm has been found nearby that shelter in place order has been lifted. And so Thomas Dagle has been tracking this for us tonight and Thomas what's the latest? The development tonight coming from Idaho authorities confirming that the SWAT team there on Canfield Mountain the site of that attack they have found the body of what they describe as a deceased male found with a firearm next to the body. So by all accounts it looks like this was the gunman who had attacked those firefighters who drew them in to that popular destination for hiking in northwestern Idaho near the border with Washington state in Coeur d'Alene Idaho. This developing throughout the day today initially it was a brush fire that was called into authorities. Firefighters responded they suffered from sniper fire. Once sheriff's deputies responded as well they also fought the gunfire from this sniper. As we say at least two firefighters were killed a third taken to hospital. An unknown number of civilians also caught on that mountain who are out on their Sunday hiking or biking at that destination. So it's unclear ultimately how many people were hit with gunfire but authorities in Idaho telling locals that the shelter in place order has now been lifted but the fire that was at the start of all this the brush fire is still burning. It's unclear how much ground that is now covering as authorities were focusing on the manhunt for several hours on that mountain in Idaho but as I say the suspect by all accounts appears to have been killed. Perhaps self-inflicted gunshot wound authorities are not saying at this point how he died but the body again was found with a firearm next to him. Police have said that officers faced gunfire from what appeared to be a high-powered rifle today Ian. Yeah and with the shelter in place order being lifted pretty clear they feel that this was the responsibility of one person and that is the person who they found dead.
