As part of our "Kindness 101" series, Steve Hartman shares how one family turned grief into gratitude with a tribute that brought meaning, memory, and language together.

The Krieger family of Boston has found a unique way to honor the memory of their late father, Neil Krieger, by promoting a word he invented: "orbisculate." The term describes the common experience of being sprayed in the eye by citrus fruit, a phenomenon familiar to many but, until now, lacking an official name.

After discovering that "orbisculate" was not present in any dictionary, siblings Jonathan and Hillary Krieger launched a campaign to have the word formally recognized. Their efforts have included encouraging its use in crossword puzzles, incorporating it into a song, and even using it in a Petri dish of phosphorescent bacteria. The word has appeared on grocery store signs and in classroom activities, with Southeastern Elementary School in Indiana creating an annual celebration day dedicated to "orbisculate."

The initiative has resonated with educators, who are teaching the word to their students, ensuring that it lives on in future generations. The Krieger siblings see this campaign as a positive way to keep their father’s memory alive and hope that, in time, "orbisculate" will be officially added to the dictionary.



Siblings honor their late father with a new word and lasting legacy

Good morning, I'm Steve. And I'm Meryl. Today we're going to be talking about what it means to honor someone. And we begin, as always, with Emmett at the dictionary desk. Emmett? For this class, I'm going to say that honor is paying tribute to someone who has passed away with a meaningful act or gesture. And what are some ways that we can honor someone? By carrying on something that they were trying to do in their lifetime. That's good. Trying to make sure that their legacy is not forgotten. The point is to just keep their memory alive. And it doesn't matter how. As you'll see in this story, pulled from our library, about honor and oranges. All you want is a nice, peaceful breakfast. So you slice open an orange or grapefruit and get ready to attack it with a spoon. Only to have it attack you back, right in the eye. The phenomenon is well documented in pop culture. Ow, you squirted me. But did you know there's a word for what your citrus does to you? You get sprayed in the eye and you go, oh, it orvisculated. It or what? Oh, it orvisculated. Brother and sister, Jonathan and Hillary Krieger of Boston, say they picked up that word from their father. As a child, you learn words because your parents use them and then you start using them and you don't kind of question, is it a real word? Until you're thumbing through a dictionary one day and find there, between orb and orbit, nothing. And I said, dad, what's wrong with this dictionary? Orvisculate, is it in it? And he said, well, maybe orvisculate. I might've made it up. I might have made this word up. The Kriegers laughed about that for years. Laughed until they cried. A few years ago, Jonathan and Hillary's dad, Neil, died of COVID. And in the days after his passing, that orbisculate story is one of the few things that still brought a smile, which gave the kids an idea. It felt like a very nice way to honor someone at a time where there's not a lot of positive things going on. What they did was launch a campaign to get orbisculate into the dictionary. Started with a list of 78 goals, like get the word in a crossword puzzle, check. Temporarily tattooed on someone's body, check. In a child's chalk drawing, check. In a Petri dish of phosphorescent bacteria, surprisingly, check. In a news story, check. Someone even put it on a sign at a grocery store. Warning, strong possibility of orbisculation. Words with friends added it to their game. This woman wrote it into a song. ♪ And that fruit orbisculated right into my eye ♪ Of course, getting orbisculate entrenched into our vernacular will be the challenge. But Jonathan and Hilary are determined to see this through. And that would be something our dad would really love. Definitely. And you don't need a dictionary to see the meaning of that. It's catching on and especially resonating with teachers and they're teaching it to their classes. And that's so important because it means the next generation will have the word and it will live on through them. I understand that one of the Kindness 101 classrooms is promoting orbisculate. Can you tell us more about that? Southeastern Elementary School in Indiana, they have gone above and beyond our wildest dreams. And actually created an annual orbisculate celebration day. And it's just wonderful to see how the word has been exciting for teachers and for students. Do you think orbisculate will ever get into the dictionary? I definitely believe that orbisculate will get into the dictionary. It's a long, long process, but it will happen. I can tell you that orbisculate is embedded into our vocabulary in this family. And I thank you for giving us the word and for giving us your time today. Thank you. Thank you so much. It's important to honor your ancestors, but you don't have to come up with a new word to do that. All you have to do is live your life by that word. And you honor all those who came before.
