Severe storms are leading to tornado threats and flash flooding from the Dakotas to the Great Lakes.

Severe storms have affected multiple states across the Midwest, including North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Wisconsin, and Illinois. The most intense storms are currently moving through areas near Chicago, with warnings issued for destructive winds and large hail.

Authorities have reported wind gusts reaching up to 80 miles per hour and hail as large as baseballs. Tornado warnings have also been issued for some areas, particularly as storms approach the Chicago metro region. Residents are advised to remain indoors as power outages and further severe weather are possible. The strongest storms are expected to continue into the night, especially along the shores of Lake Michigan.

Severe storms start the week in the Midwest

North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi. All these states have had severe storms, including Wisconsin and Illinois, which is where we're going to see the strongest storms develop here as we head into this evening. But right now, I want to focus here on the strongest storms we are currently tracking with some storms that just moved through rapid cities. I freeze-framed the radar. These storms have what we have what we call a destructive tag with them. So these are elevated severe thunderstorm warnings. These are the severe thunderstorms that are capable of producing the baseball-sized hail, the 80-mile-an-hour winds. This is primarily going to be for the wind speeds, the wind gusts, than it is going to be the hail sizes of what we are going to be tracking. But overall, we showed you Chicago, and the main reason why is this is where we're going to see the strongest storms move in. Let's go and take a closer look here, and you can see these storms are starting to move in. That storm that's moving through Elgin right there, that storm is going to be capable of producing at least 60-mile-an-hour straight-line wind gusts. This is going to be a dangerous situation. As we put the radar loop on there, it actually had a tornado warning with it previously because of how strong those winds are. So once again, the tornado threat isn't quite over just yet here with this region. We're going to continue to track this as we go forward. The storm motion is going to continue about 20, 30, and in some cases up to 40-miles-an-hour. So as I freeze-framed the radar, if I go from the coast in Chicago to the leading edge there of the storm, it's about 35-miles-away, so we have about an hour, give or take, before the storm moves in. So this is going to be a dangerous setup here with, once again, we've already had a tornado warning with that particular storm here as it continues to work its way towards Lake Michigan and the city of Chicago. So if you're in Chicago right now, if you have any plans, if you have anything to get taken care of, you need to be indoors. That's going to be the best advice I can give you as this damaging storm moves in. We could see possibly some power outages possible because of how strong the winds are as this storm is moving in. So we're going to continue to track this very closely. As you look at our updated act, we have exclusive storm zone. As we head into this evening, once again, we have two primary areas we're watching. One across the high plains of the Dakotas. That's where we've seen some of those large hail producers. And then also you see that zone right there across parts of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois, including Chicago, which is where we've had that tornado-warned storm with the strong winds now working its way into Chicago here within the hour. So as we show you the broad view once again on radar, we have multiple severe thunderstorm watches in effect right now for those areas that we've been tracking here with us. But all those little yellow boxes you see, those are all severe thunderstorm warnings that we have been tracking. And as we go forward, you can see by about 6 o'clock local central time, which is going to be coming up in another hour, that's when you can see those widespread showers, storms, and severe storms moving through the Chicago metro. So pretty much all of northern Illinois, southern parts of Wisconsin, a majority of the shores there of Lake Michigan, will be dealing with severe weather here as we enter this evening and as we head into tonight. And it actually looks like the strongest storms, the most devastating as far as the wind gusts, are actually going to develop after sunset there along the east coast of Lake Michigan, therefore the state of Michigan. So we're going to continue to track this for you here as we head into tonight.
