Large crowds gathered at Shorncliffe and Woody Point to watch the fleet depart, with many spectators enjoying the festive atmosphere and local food.

'Wild Thing,' the largest boat in the fleet, is considered a favourite to potentially break the longstanding race record. Organisers and participants, drawing on nearly 80 years of tradition, anticipate the first boats reaching Gladstone soon, coinciding with ongoing Harbour Festival celebrations.

At Shorncliffe, hundreds, if not thousands of people crammed the foreshore. What did we say? They needed a bigger jetty. Not a bigger boat. No, a bigger jetty this time. Most boats already big enough. The start easy to spot. They just started to get a little further away from our sight, so we assumed that's it. Maybe easier up close. Everyone would have one of these as a serious yacht racer, wouldn't they? They were watching too at Woody Point. It's the first time in eight years we've been home, so we decided we're just going to enjoy everything that's going to go on. We come out and watch the race go, and then we go and grab some fish and chips. This woman came to spot her brother. He's on South Passage, and he's a volunteer who's helping look after the paying passengers. Some were lucky enough to see them off on the sea. Large crowds are also expected in Gladstone when the boats arrive. With favourable winds, the first should be there tomorrow, almost all by Sunday. We started the Harbour Festival last night. Everyone's already gearing up for the entrance. They're well-practised, almost 80 years of experience. I sailed my first race, which was race number eight. This, I believe, is race now, what, 78?
