But for the most part, the Saudi-American relationship has been one of the constants in the modern Middle East. Oil lies at the heart of it, but it's become about much more than that. A link of mutual dependence, the US providing weapons, support and influence. Protection, when Iraq's Saddam briefly threatened after invading Kuwait. They get a strong ally in the Middle East, a regional counterbalance to Iran. It's a great honor to have you and your representatives here. Last time Mohammed bin Salman visited the White House, Donald Trump said it brought $450 billion to the US economy. The Saudis investing their oil wealth in technology, agriculture and land. This time the visit is expected to bring in up to $600 billion in investment. I think what Saudi Arabia is seeking is not so much conventional military security because I don't think the US can be trusted. I think what people are looking for is technology transfer and access to innovation and investment. I think that is the real transaction now. Both Trump and Joe Biden have found issues dealing with Saudi Arabia over oil production. A cut means American oil is worth more, but a glut, like we have at the moment, drops the prices for American consumers. A reminder of Saudi Arabia's dominance in world markets and how decisions there impact domestically in the US. When Mohammed bin Salman comes down the driveway towards the Oval Office, he'll know that Donald Trump wants something big. A Saudi commitment to join his Abraham Accords to normalize relations with Israel. But the Saudis know how important that is to him and so they will want something significant in return.
