A first list of 10 names has already been sent to Kigali but Rwanda says it won't take just anyone. The government insists it reserves the right to choose who will be accepted. Those selected will be offered job training, health care and help with housing. That's according to Rwanda's foreign minister who confirmed the details to France 24. In return the country will receive funding from the US but the amount has not been disclosed yet. This isn't Rwanda's first deal of this kind. Last year a similar agreement with the UK made headlines. Launched in 2022 by then Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the project was ultimately dropped by the newly elected Labour government. In recent years Rwanda has positioned itself as a destination for migrants rejected by Western countries, despite strong concerns from rights groups and the UN Refugee Agency. This latest agreement was signed quietly in parallel with peace talks aimed at ending fighting in eastern DRC. Talks led by the Trump administration and closely tied to economic interests in the region.
