Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overtchuk emphasized Russia's extensive experience in nuclear power generation and its active role in exporting nuclear technology globally, including to Southeast Asia. He highlighted Russia's leadership in the operation of small modular reactors, noting that Russia is currently the only country with such a reactor in operation and is constructing another domestically, as well as exporting the technology to Asia.

Overtchuk referenced a recent agreement between Russian company RusAtom and Myanmar to establish a small nuclear reactor, despite ongoing conflict in Myanmar since 2021. The Deputy Prime Minister's remarks underscore Russia's efforts to strengthen international partnerships in nuclear technology as part of its broader strategy to diversify its economy amid international sanctions.

We actually got wind, actually, of the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, Alexei Overtchuk, who actually held a press conference outside with mostly Russian and Malay media to talk about Russia's own positioning here in Southeast Asia. Amidst this tight huddle, actually, I was able to ask him a question about Russia's own nuclear technologies and whether or not they are getting interest, at least, to roll out some of these technologies within Southeast Asia. Here's what he told me when we held that huddle just the other day. Russia is a country that has had tremendous wealth of experience in nuclear power generation, and we have taken our knowledge and capabilities to other nations, and we work in a lot of countries implementing nuclear power station projects throughout the world. There is also – and ASEAN is obviously also part of those initiatives. There is also tremendous interest throughout the world to the new technology of small modular reactors. Russia is the only country in the world which is operating a small modular reactor. We're also building another one in Russia, and we have an export arrangement to build a small modular reactor in Asia. Now, that project in Asia might be alluding to the deal that RusAtom of Russia signed with Myanmar to establish a small nuclear reactor there of just over 100 megawatts, actually, just last March. Now, we have to remember also, Dan, that there is an ongoing brutal conflict within Myanmar that's really been raging since the junta took over in late 2021, and that's something you're going to have to consider whenever you watch out, look out for developments with regards to this potential nuclear reactor that they might set up in Myanmar amidst this very turbulent environment. But definitely, you're seeing Russia using their position as a leader in nuclear technology to perhaps build some of these relations across the world as they try to at least diversify their economy amidst the sanctions that have been imposed on them since they invaded Ukraine.
