Another stormy day in the Southeast on July 21 led to isolated flooding from Kentucky into the Carolinas and beyond.

Recent rounds of storms have resulted in significant flash flooding across the Southeast United States, particularly affecting areas in North Carolina, Kentucky, and Illinois. Rainfall totals have varied, with some locations receiving over eight inches, while even smaller amounts have led to flooding due to saturated ground from days of rain.

Reports indicate that the flooding has primarily impacted roadways and some homes, with creeks and smaller waterways overflowing their banks. Flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings remain in effect, but forecasts suggest that rainfall will decrease and conditions will begin to improve in the coming days.

As we move farther to the east, flash flooding continues to be the focus. It's been days of this at this point. I know if you're in this area, you don't need me to tell you that, but let's talk about the rainfall totals we've seen over the last 24 hours. So most of this yesterday afternoon and evening are top rainfall total coming in from Illinois here 8 1⁄2 inches. That is the outlier here. Everyone else is seeing less than four inches of rainfall, really, but at this point it almost doesn't matter because even these smaller rainfall totals just about two inches, just about one inch of rainfall or 1 1⁄4 inches, we're still getting flash flooding issues in these areas. Again, because it's been days of this at this point, I want to show you our storm reports from yesterday. Yes, none of these are from today just yet, so that's a good sign that we aren't seeing these issues quite yet, but we're still seeing rainfall. Now one of these reports coming in from Kentucky is talking about a creek out of its banks. I've been talking about the last couple of days that we could see this as an issue not really looking at river flooding, but some of the smaller waterways, streams and creeks. With this amount of rainfall, this is not surprising that we're seeing creeks out of its banks. We're seeing some of these flooding issues. Other flood reports flash flooding reports coming in mainly flooded roadways. Some homes flooded a lot of flooded roadways overall. We saw we showed you those images of people trying to drive through flooded roadways, which of course we never recommend taking a look at radar zoomed in here. We do have a couple of flash flood warnings that have popped up and even a severe thunderstorm warning or two. So yes, these are smaller cells of thunderstorms, but they're carrying a lot of lightning, some damaging wind gusts and of course. That flooding threat. It really only takes an isolated downpour to end up with some flash flooding at this point. Will continue to see this trend of isolated downpours through the evening. We're going to see things fizzle out, though, as we head into the overnight hours and then we dry out for a couple days. That's the good news.
