Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson has spoken out about Dom Young's transfer to Newcastle Knights, revealing the club did not want to send him away.

The Sydney Roosters have recently faced a series of contract negotiations involving player transfers. English international Dom Young was linked to a possible return to the Newcastle Knights after being dropped from the Roosters’ squad. Roosters representatives indicated that discussions with the Knights and Young’s management became complicated when the Knights requested the Roosters pay part of Young’s contract despite the Roosters not intending to release him.

The Roosters said they were open to Young’s transfer if Newcastle was able to take over the full contract, but the Knights’ proposal included financial terms that were not acceptable to the Roosters. Following this, Newcastle reportedly backtracked on pursuing the transfer, resulting in some uncertainty for Young.

In contrast, the transition of player Brandon Smith to South Sydney Rabbitohs was described as straightforward. Smith completed a medical assessment and is expected to train with his new club, with both clubs managing the process smoothly.

I think they're trying to bluff us into, but we didn't want it to happen. However, was willing to facilitate it, but it came with a twist the Roosters couldn't cop. And we get approached by Newcastle and his management and they say, you know, we want this to happen. And we say, fine, well, you know, you take up the contract and then they ask, they want us to release him, but us to pay money for it when we weren't even thinking about releasing him. What in what world does that happen? Like you asked, you said that you had room in your, your, your cap. So get it sorted. You threw a guy's life upside down for a week. You put another club in and but just do it in the right way. The Knights have backtracked on any potential transfer. If you ask for something, you've prepared it, then you stick by it. And they haven't done that. And it's sort of thrown Dom in a spin. A much cleaner transition for Brandon Smith, completing a medical with Souths over the weekend set to train in new colours this week. It was pretty simple from both ends. And I think both sides have handled it pretty cleanly and quite well, which will be disappointing for the, for the gossip columnists to hear. There'll always be something in rugby league for that.
