Bay Head beaches have been closed to swimmers due to strong northeast winds creating hazardous surf conditions. Officials warn that the situation may persist, as an incoming hurricane swell is expected to further increase the risk of dangerous rip currents.

The closures come at a challenging time for beach safety, with many lifeguards returning to school and newly replenished sand causing additional issues. Authorities are monitoring conditions and indicate that swimming bans may remain in effect for several days to ensure public safety.

Let's go to Ocean County this afternoon. Our Jim Murdoch is live in Bayhead, where strong winds shut down swimming for the day, Jim. Nick, take a look at these beaches behind me here in Bayhead. There's a good possibility they're not going to look like this come the end of the week. First, from the strong northeast winds bringing the surf on shore and then we have to tend with the hurricane swell the middle to latter part of the week to talk more about this. I want to bring chief of the beaches here. Hank Henschen Hank kind of unexpected today, but obviously no swimming this weather. Kind of a blessing in disguise to keep the folks out of the water. Yes it is, but we already saw somebody in the water earlier. Yeah, we closed the beach down and people are going to come down just to look at the surf because of the hurricane coming up and this is not from the hurricane. This is just a northeast wind. This is a tough time of year for lifeguard captains all up and down the beaches because this is a time of year. You're losing a lot of the staff members back to college back to high school. How many lifeguards are you losing this week? Well, we probably lost about 15 so far this year. Go went back to college and. The football players coming in late, so they're working like half days. And if we have rough water and no rain, we're working and keeping people out of the water, it's going to be tough. Another issue here in Bayhead. You just had these beaches re nourished. New sand on them that causes a whole other level of issues when you get these storms offshore. Yes, it does. The beach is already scalloped out a lot. We have cliffs on right now and the surfs it's not even high tide yet in the surfs coming up over the over the berm. High tide at 430 this afternoon. We'll see how high that water gets, but are you looking at the possibility that the beaches will not even be open for swimming all week? It looks that way. It looks like, you know, between this and the hurricane coming up, the surf is going to be up all you know. All week it's going to be pretty bad. Alright, thank you very much. And you also have to feel for the folks who rented Airbnbs down here for the week, up and down the Jersey Shore, trying to get that last vacation in before the end of the summer.
