She's been picking olives for as long as she can remember. Fatima Sweti is 80 years old. For her, the annual harvest is about the olives as much as it is about connecting to the land. A chance to practice ʻone, an Arabic word that translates as collective help. It's a cultural tradition that embodies unity and solidarity. Particularly during the harvest season. Friends and neighbors volunteer to make a difficult process easier, quicker, and hopefully more enjoyable. Orona was beautiful back then. Those were the good days, before the Israeli settlers started fighting us everywhere and every day. Now we barely have enough land left to harvest. Today, Fatima is helping extended family members, making food, sorting the olives, and babysitting. She hopes there is safety in numbers. Here in the village of Beit Awa, settlers have been attacking Palestinian farmers, just as they do elsewhere in the occupied West Bank. So far this season, the UN says these attacks have damaged more than 3,000 fully grown trees and seedlings. Palestinians say the Israeli intention is clear. Scare people off so they abandon their trees, so they desert their lands. As Israeli soldiers turn a blind eye, a defenseless population turns inwards for help. They resort to ʻone. Once a celebration of the blessings of the land, now a rescue mission. My lands have been confiscated by Israel. I'm a farmer who's worked the land forever. I can't just leave it. I want to be involved in the harvest and help other families. Mahmoud's olive groves are near the Israeli-built separation wall in the village. He needs an Israeli permit to harvest them. Unlike other farmers, he was allowed in this time. A task that usually takes days, he was forced to complete in hours. Once picked, the fruit are pressed. Olive oil is central to Palestinian food and culture. It's called the gold of the land. But this is more than oil, more than olives, more than an agricultural season. It's an identity Palestinians hope to pass on to the next generations. One that refuses to be uprooted and refuses to be erased. Neda Ibrahim, Al Jazeera.
