It's become the must-have tech accessory for everyone from artists and athletes and MotoGP teams to everyday workers. When you walk through a street and you walk past a library or walk into a WeWork and you see an absolute stranger using the product in person, right next to you, that to me I never get over. Espresso Displays is the overnight Aussie success story between four friends, Will Scuderi, Scott McEwan, Fabian Maritato and Gary Calderola. Born out of Will and Scott trying to do a uni assignment on a tiny laptop screen. The initial thought was, oh, I wish I was a second screen for my laptop. And then it was not about a business. It wasn't even about creating our own product. It was initially about, let's go to Amazon, let's go online, let's just see if we can buy something for this because it solves our problem. And we kept on looking, we couldn't find anything. So instead, Will built a rough prototype of their now flagship product on a 3D printer. The 3D printer is something that is embarrassing to think back on now, but it worked, it did the job and it got the point across. Right at that early stage, it's all about the excitement, the momentum, that inspiration. It's just like that energy and optimism that kind of drives it. Fast forward to a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2019 that delivered a million dollars in sales in the first year the team knew they were onto something. And the world started noticing. This is one of the most portable external monitors I've ever seen. And recognition elsewhere as well. Their espresso display, the world's thinnest screen, named Time Magazine's coveted best inventions list. Originally, the plan was to create a product for travellers and people frequenting co-working spaces. That was until the pandemic hit and the world discovered remote working. Now, much of their focus is on helping companies offer their staff productive working spaces, wherever they choose. Companies need a way to scale their in-office experience, but take that remote. Things like being able to whiteboard from anywhere, being able to mark up documents from anywhere. That whole office experience folded up and put into your bag so you can take it anywhere. A core component of their audience, creators, with new fans discovering them every day. Among them, interest from some of the biggest names on the planet, including animators at Lucasfilm behind the iconic Star Wars franchise. The sort of concept art that happens in the film production process, and for them a tool like ours has great functionality and is also ultra-portable. It unlocks their ability to be creative from anywhere. The company that now sells in more than 35 countries around the world, including the US and Europe, has almost overnight become one of the top performing hardware companies to ever come out of Australia. Building hardware is hard, in Australia even more so. For us, having that opportunity to be able to have engineering jobs right here, have design jobs right here, and of course the marketing and sales jobs function of that business right here, was a real motivator. Four years in, while quietly enjoying 600% year-on-year growth, the start-up now well on the way to becoming a global success story.
