Lebanon's national news agency reported the death toll rose to at least 15 at the end of rescue operations, citing the civil defense chief. He said earlier the two buildings were home to 22 residents. Officials said on Sunday the adjoining buildings had collapsed. Mohamed Mahmoud Omar told Reuters he owned a shop inside one of them. He said he closed his business at 1 p.m. on Sunday and went home. He woke up and was told the building collapsed and his shop was leveled to the ground. How it came down, nobody knows, he says. He saw no cracks. State media reported that a number of aging residential buildings have collapsed in Tripoli, Lebanon's second largest city, in recent weeks. Abdelhamid Karima is the head of Tripoli's municipal council. He said the issue of unsafe buildings was a long-standing one. Many of the structures were between 60 and 70 years old and had exceeded their lifespan without undergoing essential maintenance. He said he'd asked for state intervention to either reinforce the buildings or demolish them and rebuild in their place. Karima said the municipality carried out a survey that identified 105 buildings as at risk of collapsing and 600 that need immediate intervention. But this building wasn't included in the survey. There were no visible signs on this building, he said. He added authorities have begun providing temporary shelter to displaced families, while Lebanon's Higher Relief Committee is offering housing allowances for up to three months.
