Wilson and Love settled on a surfing theme. I never surfed, and he never surfed either. Did you feel the need to surf for any reason? No, I never tried it. ♪ Let's go surfing now, everybody's learning how ♪ ♪ Come on a safari with me ♪ Wilson soon grew more ambitious. His bandmates resisted. They wanted to keep making car songs and surf songs. I said, guys, we gotta grow. We gotta grow musically. ♪ Oh baby, I said we were on it ♪ In 1966, with the Pet Sounds album, he reached for a richer orchestral sound. I was so proud of that album, I could've cried. It's widely regarded as a masterpiece. But Wilson battled depression. His father had been physically and verbally abusive. You said, in my life, being scared is probably the most driving force that I had. Being scared? Yeah. Does that sound like you? Yeah, yeah. After long periods of drug addiction and mental illness, he reemerged in the 90s. I'm not always in a positive, happy place, Wilson said, but I'm able to concentrate enough to come up with a really good song. ♪ God only knows what I did with my life ♪ ♪ God only knows ♪
