Major franchises such as 'Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning', 'Jurassic World Rebirth', and a live-action 'Lilo & Stitch' remake have brought in hundreds of millions, with 'Lilo & Stitch' surpassing the $1 billion mark. However, some high-budget superhero films have delivered mixed financial results.

Industry analysts note that Hollywood's focus on familiar properties is driven by efforts to attract audiences who have become less frequent moviegoers. Despite the success of certain sequels, overall box office revenue remains below pre-pandemic figures. The original film 'Sinners' stands out as a rare non-franchise hit, earning over $365 million. Experts suggest that an emphasis on sequels may limit creativity and risk-taking in the industry.

We end tonight at the movies. Weapons was number one at the box office for a second weekend, Freakier Friday, and Nobody 2 rounded out the top three. Summer is Hollywood's blockbuster season, which really comes down to sequels, reboots, and remakes. As CBS's Andres Gutierrez in Los Angeles reports, some titles arrived in the theaters years after the original. This summer, sequels and remakes battled it out at the box office. Tom Cruise powered Mission Impossible, the final reckoning produced by Paramount, the parent company of CBS, towards $600 million, almost 30 years after the first one hit the big screen. One last time. Jurassic World Rebirth, number seven in the franchise, raked in more than $800 million. And the live-action remake of the 2002 hit Lilo & Stitch is the only movie this year to cross the $1 billion threshold. Box office analyst Scott Mendelsohn. Why is Hollywood so focused right now on making these sequels? A large segment of general moviegoers have comparatively stopped going to the movies, so in order to get their attention, unfortunately, the easiest or safest way to do that is to give them another version of something they already like. Hollywood is banking on a blockbuster summer, but with just a few weeks remaining in the season, ticket sales are coming up short of pre-pandemic box office toys. Mendelsohn says studios should look to original releases like Sinners, which has already earned more than $365 million. It's the biggest non-franchise movie in 15 years. The need to appease and impress shareholders is not good for creativity, taking risks, artistic freedom. And, Eureka, for those who love sequels, the third Avatar will be out this Christmas.
