An exact reproduction of a Soviet-era mosaic destroyed during Russia’s 2022 siege of Mariupol was unveiled in Kyiv’s Maidan Square on Thursday (June 12), offering a sense of cultural resilience and identity in times of war.

A colorful mosaic from the Soviet era in Ukraine's Mariupol stood as a symbol of the country's resilience. This is not it. The original Boriveter mosaic was destroyed during Russia's siege of the city in 2022. But a team of young Ukrainian artists have rebuilt it from scratch in Kiev. After months of work, it's been installed just steps from Ukraine's Independence Monument, pairing two icons of persistence and identity during times of war. For one of the artists, Olha, the mosaic isn't just art, it's memory. OLHA, Artist, Ukraine's Independence Monument This is a legendary artwork. It's actually very important. It emphasizes once again the fact that the Russians are destroying, and we are restoring it, despite everything. And we do it with dignity, with quality, cool, and with love in our hearts for what was. I hope that Alla Horska would be proud of us if she saw this. Horska, the original artist behind Boriveter, Ukrainian for kestrel, the bird it shows, was a dissident who died in 1970 at just 41. She's widely believed to have been assassinated by Soviet authorities for her leading role in a dissident group. The artwork was restored thanks to a collaboration between Horska's family fund, non-profits, and private companies. Her granddaughter, Olena Zaretska, was involved in the restoration. Though she never met her grandmother, she says the replica is a way of connecting with her. I didn't know my grandmother and wasn't familiar with her, because she was killed before I was born. And I see these processes happening elsewhere. How many Ukrainians are searching and finding family members about whom they didn't know anything? Those are relatives that were oppressed in the camps or killed during Stalin's repression. After the mosaic was unveiled, passers-by stopped to snap photos. Others, like 66-year-old Olena, whose family was displaced from Miryupol, stopped to reflect. I'm going to send them this now. Thank God they survived. They are abroad now. It's horrible. They lost everything, but they are in Europe now. I'm going to send it to them, and they'll see it.
