Thousands of families across the Bay Area are still recovering from the devastating 2024 hurricane season that flooded neighborhoods which had never taken on water before. FOX 13's Jennifer Kveglis reports.

Hillsborough County, Florida, has secured $70 million from a federal disaster recovery grant to address damage caused by the 2024 hurricane season. The funding will be used for drainage repairs, restoration projects, and flood protection upgrades in neighborhoods such as the university area, Town and Country, and Seffner.

The grant is part of a larger $709 million federal package, with additional funds allocated for regional drainage upgrades and resiliency enhancements like generators for wastewater lift stations. Most projects are expected to begin the design phase by summer, with remaining funds supporting programs to help residents rebuild their homes.

I know millions of dollars are gonna reach communities countywide. Tell us more. Yeah, mark. It is $70 million coming from a giant federal grant that will help with upgrades in areas like the university area, town and country and Seffner and so many more. The bulk of that money will go towards drainage repairs and restoration. Something one community says is much needed. Shangri La of Seffner H. O. A. President Kevin Cash has lived on this natural lake for 30 years. Now you can see how low the water is. Now, he says, despite the ongoing drought levels right now are higher than normal, but nothing will compare to what he saw after Hurricane Milton might stick down there. I don't know if you can see that or not, but the water was above the red. It was over the metal barrier on my patio there. Some neighbors even encountered a gator outside their door. So this little lake here, which is only 15 acres, it flooded over 20 homes. It landlocked probably another 50 that couldn't get out of their neighborhoods. So, you know, for for several weeks, because basically we were the bottom of the bowl down here. Days later, Hillsborough County put out this temporary pump, leaving cashes home like this. Three weeks later, when the water began to recede, we're gonna put the development in. We've got to figure out a way to deal with stormwater. But now relief is on the way. A permanent stormwater pump station for the neighborhood approved by county commissioners Wednesday. It's part of a $70 million rebuilding for tomorrow grant package stemming from a $709 million disaster recovery federal grant to fund flood protection projects across the county. That's in addition to $9 million for drainage work. Green lit earlier this year through the dollars approved Wednesday, the university area devastated by Milton and town and country devastated by Helene will both receive regional drainage upgrades. Resiliency enhancements like generators for 171 wastewater lift stations included to glad to see the county's finally starting to do something, but they need to move faster. The county says most of these projects will enter the design phase as soon as the summer and the bulk of the funds left over will go towards county programs, helping residents rebuild their homes in Hillsborough County.
