Record number of young people enrolled for Voice vote

There are 17.6 million Australians who are now enrolled to vote in this referendum. So that is 97.7% of eligible voters who now will be able to cast their ballots. And that is up by 447% or, sorry, 447,000, I should say, or 2.6% from last year's federal election. This is the highest voter enrolment that we've had since Federation back in 1901. And you can imagine that the Australian Electoral Commission is pretty chuffed with these figures. They say that our enrolment rate is now the envy of the world. And as you say, it's the Indigenous and young voters who are really wanting to make sure that their voices are heard in this referendum. So amongst Indigenous voters, we now have that at an all-time high in terms of enrolment rates. That's up to 94.1%. While for those voters who are aged between 18 and 24, so these are the people who are going to be casting their ballots in their very first ever referendum, that's actually gone up to 91.4%. So these two categories were typically and traditionally underrepresented in the electoral role. So it's great to see that they have come on board. And voting or the enrolment to vote, obviously, closed on Monday night. But what we do see the Australian Electoral Commission saying now is that as of next week, they are going to start springing into action in terms of making sure that all of those votes get out to some of these remote voting areas. So the remote voting services will start up from Monday. Also they will be using planes, trains, boats, everything possible to make sure that they can get those votes to every single corner of the country. Also what we're hearing as well is the high number of postal vote applications as well. So there are 1.2 million people who have made an application for a postal vote. And along with pre-polling votes, that might mean that we won't see a result necessarily on referendum night come October 14, given the fact that we're seeing those postal votes 200,000 more than during the election last year.
