Crews in Central Texas are facing new challenges as they continue to search for people who remain missing after flash flooding slammed the region one week ago. Law enforcement says there are more than 2,100 responders working to find the remaining victims.

The disaster has sparked debate over the accuracy of FEMA's flood maps, with climate experts and independent analyses suggesting that the official maps may underestimate the number of at-risk properties. Local leaders are also testing alternative emergency alert systems, and communities are commemorating victims by tying green ribbons, the official color of Camp Mystic, around trees.

Patrick Turk is a program director with texas search and rescue. As people remain missing, he and his team will keep working to find them even as they face new challenges. Now we're dealing with the water being down drastically and huge debris fields that we have to sort through and that takes a lot of time. The search comes amid disagreement over federal flood maps, which some climate experts say don't factor in heavy rainfall and topography. According to flood zones identified by fema, more than 2500 properties in Kirk County are at risk. But an analysis by the climate modeling company first street identified nearly 4600 at risk structures, including at least 17 at hard hit camp mystic. It's staggering. We spoke to J. Banner, a climatologist with the University of texas along the banks of the Guadalupe River. How well do the models take into account the landscape as far as where it could lead to flash floods in the same vein as we need to advance our climate modeling with more more research in these areas. We also do the same with understanding what we call hydrologic processes. Once the water is hitting the ground, where is it going? Less than 30 miles away from Kerrville in Bandera texas last week's floods and reports over issues with digital emergency alerts prompted leadership to test an alternative warning system yesterday. We were there as Mayor Denise Griffin and her team demoed the city siren for the first time in decades to see if it could work in the future. If it only saves one life, that's one life saved. So that's a good thing. If it saves more than that, the more the merrier. And as we mark one week since the flood here, we are starting to see communities around the state tying green ribbons around trees, not just here, but this is happening all over texas. Why the color green you ask? And this is to commemorate those who died. The color green is the official color of Camp Mystic.
