With three days until Australia votes on an indigenous voice to parliament, the place where it all began is in the spotlight.  The Prime Minister has welcomed former Liberal MP Pat Farmer at the base of Uluru at the end of his more than 14-thousand kilometre run for the voice.

Uluru, the last stop on a long journey. Here in the Red Centre, former Liberal MP Pat Farmer ended his epic run around Australia to promote the voice to Parliament. The Prime Minister there to greet him on the final days of the referendum campaign. What he has done is in running 14,500 kilometres to ask his fellow Australians to just walk a few metres, walk into a polling booth and write Y-E-S. It's a big country, a hell of a journey, but one that is probably the most worthwhile journey of my life. Uluru may be the finish line today, but it was on this sacred country that the trek towards the voice started six years ago. We call for the First Nations voice enshrined in the Constitution. In 2017, around 250 First Nations delegates met here to debate and decide how to recognise Indigenous Australians in the Constitution. They put forward the Uluru Statement from the Heart, calling for a voice and a truth-telling commission. The Prime Minister met with Anangu elders involved in the voice's creation, but now they fear the voice journey could be coming to an end. In their own language, these women called on Australia to listen to them. Why won't you listen to us? These community leaders know the disempowerment and disadvantage their people face, and want a voice. Yes, you are. If the polls are to be believed, the referendum is likely to fail, and now some are contemplating what a no vote might look like. On a Saturday night, I've got a speech I've lined out for myself, and whether it's a yes or a no, it's the same speech. Let's say no gets up, it's not about a celebration, it's about putting the hand out and wanting us all to work together and then move forward. Just days before the vote, Patrick Dodson returned to the national stage after a cancer battle. I am still recovering. After the vote on October the 14th, people are going to have to look in the mirror and say, what have we done? A campaign coming to an end, and emotions running high.
