There is a direct connection between the policies that we're seeing coming out of the White House and the organizations that are pulling out. But even before Trump, money has long been an issue for Pride Toronto. A similar deficit existed last year and the organization has also been plagued by mismanagement and rising costs. The City of Toronto has pitched in with $350,000 for this year but organizers say they need more or they may have to scale back in 2026. It's a shame to see that people are pulling out. My perception is that it's got to do with the political stage situation in the U.S. Along Church Street, the main artery of the community reaction is mixed. It became really really commercial over the years and all you saw were like these big companies floats and stuff which meant nothing to me. It's not just the Pride Festival here in Toronto that's dealing with an exodus of sponsors. It's Pride Festivals all across North America. Pride events in Halifax, New York, Washington and San Francisco have recently lost support. It's part of a broader and international trend. In fact, all different kinds of festivals across Canada have struggled recently as sponsors re-evaluate how they spend their money amidst economic uncertainty. It's quite a phenomenon in Canada as well and that there are a lot of festivals that decide whether to pause, to cancel their 2025 edition or to just stop their activities.
