Many ranchers, including leaders within the Arizona Cattle Growers Association, argue that recent price increases have finally allowed them to see profits after years of slim margins. They believe that allowing the free market to operate, rather than increasing imports, will ultimately stabilize prices. Some Republican members of Congress have also voiced opposition to the proposal. As of now, no official decision has been made regarding the importation of Argentine beef.

President Trump said he's thinking about importing more beef from Argentina to bring prices at the store down for consumers. I'm Adam McLeod on the Arizona Cattle Ranch listening to ranchers about what they think of that proposal. Way out west, Brian Dagonal, a third generation Arizona rancher and president of the Arizona Cattle Growers Association, is working his herd. This is Fall Works, but we're at one corral of many on the ranch. The day's job, with some help from family and friends, is branding, then vaccinating his calves. We're just trying to ease in there, neck one and then next cow healing. It's hard, rewarding work. Ranching's always been a family business, has been for years. But lately, harder to make a living doing it. So this has been quite a week in the cattle business. Partly because 30,000 feet above Brian Dagonal's ranch, President Trump said this. The only price we have that's high is beef, and we'll get that down. One of the things we're thinking about doing is beef from Argentina. Those words were enough to shake the cattle market. Beef futures fell sharply, and ranchers like Dagonal felt the hit immediately. 90% of cattle ranchers are Trump voters. But yeah, this is something that we have to call him on and say, no, we don't agree, right? Beef prices have risen by almost a dollar a pound since February. But for American ranchers, that's meant finally seeing some solid profit after years of thin margins. We don't think the government should be manipulating markets. Dagonal does believe is with more profits in time, the free market, not imports, will lower prices. We need to be able to make a living ranching. And that will build, the market will correct itself, and there will be more cattle if there's a profit to be made. Some Republican members of Congress are publicly pushing back against the president's comments. President Trump hasn't yet made any official decision to import beef from Argentina.
