When wildfires raged around Los Angeles last year, Rene Amy's home was razed to a pile of toxic ash. But his plot now shimmers with delicate orange blooms -- the California poppies he has sown throughout the charred town of Altadena as a symbol of hope.

In Altadena, California, a community devastated by wildfires in January 2025 has found hope through the mass planting of California poppies. Resident Rene Amie sowed 250 million poppy seeds across more than 700 empty lots, transforming fire-scarred land into vibrant fields of flowers.

The wildfires resulted in 19 deaths and destroyed over 9,000 buildings, with rebuilding efforts still ongoing and insurance claims delayed. The blooming poppies, the official state flower, have become a symbol of resilience and renewal for locals and visitors alike.

Just over a year ago this area was a wasteland devastated by the California wildfires. Rene Amie's property in Altadena was polluted with toxic ash from his neighbors cars which burnt in the blaze. He decided to plant poppies as a mark of hope. These flowers sort of like the Altadena spirit if you will sort of like the Altadena spirit these flowers will grow and proliferate anywhere on the globe that humans can survive now they are they are so resilient they look super fragile but they're not they're pretty tough underneath so again kind of like Altadena's. Amie has planted 250 million poppy seeds across more than 700 empty lots costing him thousands of dollars locals and tourists have been enjoying the blooms. Altadena was ravaged by the wildfires that tore through Los Angeles in January 2025. 19 people died in the area and more than 9,000 buildings were destroyed. Efforts to rebuild are taking time with many insurance claims slow to process. In the meantime the flowers offer some cheer to locals. It's like a new beginning it's like the earth is reviving and coming back from this horrible disaster and to have these flowers have the poppies come back that's that's part of Altadena that's part of the the vibe of Altadena. This particular plant was chosen for a good reason the California poppy is the official flower of the Golden State
