It was, it really was. It was so inspiring. He's probably the first pope to ever talk about cinema. And the words were very, very moving. As filmmakers, he really charged us to, of course, filmmaking is about entertainment, but it's about including voices that are often marginalized. He is a pope who grew up with television and grew up with cinema and it's a natural idiom to tell his stories. Tagg says the message is clear. The church doesn't just tolerate the arts, it embraces them. We have to trust that the artist, even when he or she is being provocative, that he or she is genuinely trying to waken us up, grab our attention and make us think about things that are important. A message underscored by the pope's love of movies and the people who make them. Now, Pope Leo is actually building on a tradition that was started by Pope Francis when he famously invited comedians here like Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Rock, and Jimmy Fallon. At the time, it was safe to wonder who needed the publicity more? And now with Hollywood back here in Rome, the same question may still apply.
