The protected status of Ukrainians like them is set to expire at the end of the month, putting the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands at risk. Polish clients come to us and the girls teach the classes in Polish. They respond very positively, they appreciate us. I've never received any negative comments from Poles. After Russia's full invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Poland passed a law granting Ukrainians the right to stay, work and receive benefits. Last month, Poland's nationalist president, Karol Nawrocki, vetoed the latest version of the law. An amended one is awaiting his signature, while the far-right campaigns against it. The initial enthusiasm for helping refugees has faded. Now people are calculating what it costs and who's paying the price. Private sector representatives, though, say Ukrainians have made a significant contribution to Poland's growth. Up to 80 percent of Ukrainian war refugees remain active in the labor market, meaning they are working or looking for work. These rates are even higher than those of the native population. Consultants Deloitte estimate that Ukrainian refugees now account for 2.7 percent of Poland's GDP.
