As artificial intelligence continues to advance, frauds and scams are being more sophisticated. As CBC's Nicole Healey explains, police in Alberta are working to raise awareness about AI, fraud and how to detect it.

Authorities in Edmonton, Alberta, report a significant increase in scams and fraud, with losses exceeding $58 million in the past year. Police, along with community organizations, are using Fraud Prevention Month to raise awareness about the growing use of artificial intelligence in scams and to educate the public on how to recognize such threats.

Common scams include cryptocurrency investment fraud, online and phone schemes, and relationship scams. Police emphasize that only a small fraction of victims report these crimes due to stigma, and they encourage the public to hesitate before sharing personal information and to contact authorities if they suspect fraudulent activity.

Police warn of the growing threat of AI scams

Over 58 million dollars was lost to scams and fraud in Edmonton last year. Police say it's a growing problem no closer to being stopped. For Fraud Prevention Month, Alberta RCMP, Edmonton Police and several other community organizations are raising awareness of the use of AI specifically in scams and how to spot it. This is an industry and unfortunately they are very skilled at it in terms of the psychological aspect and how they get into their victims and they don't let go of them. EPS says in 2025 more than 4,000 frauds were reported in Edmonton. It just takes a second to click on the wrong link and download dangerous software onto your device or perhaps be redirected to a fake website of your financial institution. The most common scams in Canada include investment in cryptocurrency fraud, online scams, phone and mass marketing schemes and relationship scams. I think there's still such shame and a bit of a stigma, embarrassment involved. Only 5-10% of scam victims ever report that they were a victim and we need to change that. Wayne Keith knows firsthand how easy it is to get caught and thankfully he noticed a problem before anything happened. He goes, oh wait, you let your wife do all your banking for you? And I go, give me my phone back. How did he know this? I mean that was just so fast so he was a very nice guy to talk to. Keith says it's worrisome that trusted sources can be faked so easily these days. It's terrible how the world is getting better and better and better but worse at the same time. Edmonton police say when in doubt, hesitate before giving anyone your personal information and don't be afraid to call police or fraud services if something seems off.
