I see seven police cars, a dippy man in the driveway, another ambulance on the street and an undercover car. It all began yesterday afternoon on Wells Street in Springfield. Around 3.30 a Concern for Welfare call was made, a mental health clinician, tactical operations and negotiators brought in. As the man set fire to an aerosol can, police say, in an attempt to burn an officer. Capsicum spray and a taser deployed but ineffective and by 9.25 the specialist squad forced entry when he lashed at an officer with a shard of glass, stabbing his safety vest. As a result, a number of officers have discharged their firearms and they have fatally injured that person. We heard like a glass sort of bang or a shatter and then we see all the police officers out the front door. Forensics today called in, taking the household weapons for testing. Police now looking at their own actions during the mental health episode. I've called a critical incident investigation to ensure that they're in line with our policy and legislation. Paying special attention to the final conversation before the lethal exchange. The exact words that he was saying will obviously form part of that brief for the coroner but certainly he was threatening and agitated towards the police. Authorities say the 49-year-old was known to them but his history was limited. Neighbours say he lived with his mother, recently lost his job and seemed particularly distressed over the past few days. Very tragic set of circumstances.
