An major police investigation has been launched into the discover of an infant's body in a stormwater drain in Alexander Heights, WA.

Police are investigating after a baby's body was discovered in a stormwater drain on a residential street in Alexander Heights, Western Australia. The body, believed to be that of a newborn, was found by workmen cleaning the drain and was wrapped in a towel. 

Authorities have not disclosed how long the infant may have been in the drain. Forensic officers are collecting evidence at the scene, and police have appealed to the public for any information that could assist the investigation. Residents in the area have expressed shock and sadness at the incident.

There's a large police presence here after officers responded to reports of a baby's body being discovered in a stormwater drain on this residential street in Alexander Heights. It's believed workmen who were cleaning the drain found the baby wrapped in a towel inside the stormwater system around 1 o'clock this afternoon. Police have not yet revealed how long it's believed the baby was in the drain, but it's understood the infant may have been a newborn. Parts of LaSalle Road are now blocked off as investigators comb the area, forensic officers collecting evidence and taking photographs as they try to piece together the circumstances surrounding this tragedy. Residents here obviously shocked and saddened by the tragic news. Officers are appealing to anyone with information to contact police immediately. Taylor.
