It's a very sad sight on the Polish-German border today that these controls have been introduced. Remember that we take children to school, kindergarten, we go to work. Guests from Germany come to us, use services, do shopping, so this means a very big limitation on everyday life. Across the border in Germany there are similar concerns that the 29-member bloc's commitment to free movement of people is under threat. I'm really concerned because I think we are going backwards and a cornerstone of the single market is the free flow of goods and services and also workers and I think that's the wrong signal, we are moving in the wrong direction. But immigration, lawful or otherwise, is a heated topic in the country, embraced by the far right. One expert explains that while the measures don't necessarily make sense along the German border, it does elsewhere. We have of course a serious migration problem caused by weaponization of migration by Russia and Belarus at the Polish-Russian border and this is why the checks on the Lithuanian border are somewhat logical or rational. The reintroduction of border checks may remain in place for a month, with the option to extend to three months or even beyond.
