A car travelling on Regent Street in South Sydney veered onto the wrong side of the road, crashed into a power pole, and struck a gas main, resulting in a fire that engulfed a Pizza Hut restaurant. The explosion was heard several blocks away, but emergency crews confirmed that no one was inside the residential unit above the restaurant at the time.

Police stated that the vehicle involved was a hire car and had not been reported stolen. The driver allegedly fled the scene before authorities arrived. Power has since been restored to nearby businesses, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

I can't understand how this could happen, it's in the middle of the street. Police say the vehicle is a hire car and initial investigations indicate it hadn't been reported as stolen. As for the driver's whereabouts, they allegedly fled the scene before cops arrived. What's the next step for you now? The insurance people try to do something but I know I'm waiting for the people to board it up but that's it. The damage, yeah it's quite significant to that premises.
