Oscar Piastri's sprint race in Austin ended early after a collision with teammate Lando Norris and Nico Hülkenberg, resulting in both McLaren cars retiring from the race. The incident left Norris' car with only three tyres and opened the door for Max Verstappen, who went on to win the sprint and secure pole position for the upcoming Grand Prix.

Despite some blame being directed at Piastri, Norris publicly stated that the Australian was not at fault, explaining that Piastri was hit by another car. The crash allowed Verstappen to close the championship gap, while Norris managed a strong qualifying performance and will start the main race from second on the grid, with Piastri set to begin from eighth.

Four weeks since his opening lap exit at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Oskar Piastri's start again didn't go according to plan, this time in the sprint race in Austin. Piastri tangles and spins Norris round and makes contact with Nico Hülkenberg and there's a tyre rolling down the hill there that has come off one of the cars as Verstappen goes clear. Both McLarens were forced out of the race, Lando Norris' car left with just three tyres. Whilst one reporter laid blame at the feet of the Australian, his team mate and rival was, at least publicly, having none of it. Oskar got hit by another car. No, it... Yeah, no, Oskar got hit. Okay, so you don't consider that it's his fault? Oskar got hit, like it can't be his fault. We both went pretty deep into turn one and I tried to cut back and got a hit. So, yeah, obviously not a great way to start the day. And it didn't get much better. The exit of both McLarens opened the door for Max Verstappen to further close the championship gap. That's eight points in the bag, thank you very much. Verstappen wins the Austin sprint. It was a similar story in qualifying for Verstappen. He set the pace in Q1, Q2 and Q3 and will start tomorrow's Grand Prix from P1. For Isaac Heijer, his similarities were to Piastri and Norris, with his day ending in the opening minutes of Q1. And he is absolutely furious with himself. Okay, which is great to see, but utterly furious. Norris fared much better than Piastri in qualifying. He'll start from P2 with a big chance to close the championship gap on the Australian, who will kick off his quest from eighth spot on the grid. Roger Aldridge, 10 News.
