The ministry identified the individual as Miguel Rodriguez, also known by the aliases Cuchillo or Knife. According to a statement on the social media platform X, the arrest took place in Colombia and followed coordinated intelligence efforts involving Peruvian and Colombian authorities, as well as Interpol.

Earlier, police and industry sources reported that the miners were kidnapped and murdered by illegal miners aligned with criminal groups. This incident has led to increased violence in the region, prompting the government to establish a military facility in the area to address the unrest.

Peruvian officials have stated that illegal gold mining in the country now generates an estimated $3 to $4 billion per year, surpassing revenues from drug trafficking. A lawyer representing Rodriguez told local radio that his client had spent several days in Venezuela before returning to Colombia, where he was detained. Rodriguez has previously denied any involvement in the killings during an interview with a local television station.
