One Nation's Pauline Hanson and Green Senator Maureen Faruqi are polar political opposites, but it took the death of the Queen to bring them to a legal shootout. Within hours of the monarch's demise, Senator Faruqi tweeted that she could not mourn the leader of a racist empire built on stolen lives. Four hours later, Pauline Hanson responded with a tweet that said in part, pack your bags and piss off back to Pakistan. Last year, the federal court found Senator Hanson had breached the Racial Discrimination Act. She had offended, humiliated and intimidated the Green Senator. But Senator Hanson in her full court appeal today is arguing it's absurd to say Senator Faruqi could be offended, given her own frequent offensive language online. The outcome of this case will determine two key questions. Is it racist under the law to tell a migrant to go back where they came from? And is it any less racist if you only say it on social media? Pauline Hanson is arguing nothing in her tweet was aimed at people of colour generally. It was specifically about Senator Faruqi's alleged hypocrisy, not about any group. Her barrister also told the court, Twitter is not a church group or a knitting club. The court cannot sit in an ivory tower, she said. Social media is where people feel free to express themselves in ways they might not do in person. I'm very pleased the way it's going. It's going to be a long day and I'll wait and see how it ends up. But thank you very much for your support to all these friends out there who are supporting me. Thank you.
